Prospero's Paintings

Picture
I did not find visual art; visual art found me. Perhaps I drew some interesting abstracts in notebooks over the years... but that was my secret. I did not expect to be painting with acrylics on a regular basis until around 2011. Showing my art to anyone other than my cat was never a consideration in my earlier years!

So what happened to set Prospero’s Paintings in motion? Here’s the brief story. I work in human services. My company put together informal groups for the people it serves to attend. An art journaling group interested me because I have filled 40-50 journals with my writing over the years and felt I could share the therapeutic value of writing.  Something clicked when I started to participate in the visual activities. Before long, I acquired acrylic paints and began to express myself visually at home. The group ended long ago, but it created the momentum I needed to make visual art an important part of my life.

My art fingerprint is filled with textures; few of my works are completely flat. Frequent subject matters include cats, cosmic entities, and abstract oddities. I view each painting as a poem written in a language of colors and images. Inspiration surrounds me. My travels have influenced my painting style considerably. A trip to Mexico City for Dia De Los Muertos in 2015 had a significant impact on my approach to color. I enjoy experimenting with materials such as spaghetti and modeling paste in my works.

The painting on the top of the top part of this page is Fluorescent Space Cat.  The second painting is called Sincerity.
